Time spent in education today is an investment for tomorrow says a new joint Eurydice/Cedefop report recently published. The report monitors developments across Europe and confirms that early leaving represents a complex challenge at individual, national and European levels.
HOUSING
The European Parliament recommends that the Member States and their relevant authorities invest in the
construction and refurbishment of affordable social housing in order to address the issues
of dilapidated housing and the attendant health risks, diverse family structures, the ageing
population, dependent elderly people who choose to remain in their own homes, the
specific needs of disabled persons and of young people, particularly in terms of housing
and professional mobility; recommends that structural funding be used for these purposes
under the next programming period (2014-2020).

Food safety: Report on controls of fruit and vegetable imports shows system is protecting European consumers
The European Commission has published the results of border checks carried out by EU countries on imports of fruits and vegetables that are subject to an increased level of official controls. The report presents the results of controls on almost 100 000 consignments carried out at EU borders.
Over 11 000 of these controls led to laboratory analyses, which resulted in 496 consignments (4.4% of those that underwent controls) being found to be in breach of EU legislation and being prevented from entering the EU market. This is a slight increase as compared with 2013, when 4.1% of consignments were stopped at EU borders.

Since the 1970s, the European Union (EU) and its member countries have introduced laws to ensure the careful use of natural resources, to minimise adverse environmental impacts of production and consumption, and to protect biodiversity and natural habitats. Based on Title XX of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, EU environment law covers aspects as wide-ranging as waste management, air and water quality, greenhouse gases and toxic chemicals.

Passenger rights: Eurobarometer survey shows one in three EU citizens are aware of their rights when travelling
The European Commission released he results of a new Eurobarometer survey on passenger rights. Nearly one third of EU citizens are aware of their rights and obligations when buying a ticket to travel (31%), although 59 % said to be unaware of them according to the survey. The results also show a very high level of satisfaction among passengers who need assistance due to a disability or reduced mobility: 81% of them were happy with the assistance received.
